Global Landscapes: South Africa

Now showing at House of Sisters Grimm, following her Saatchi Gallery solo exhibition during the British Art Fair

South Africa Series

Ella Spira MBE’s Global Landscapes: South Africa unites art, music, and place in a deeply personal body of work.

Comprising 38 original works painted en plein air across South Africa, from Table Mountain and Cape Agulhas to the Sterkfontein Caves and Cape Winelands, the collection reflects Spira’s enduring bond with the country.

That connection began in 2009, through her collaboration with Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which inspired the Grammy-nominated production INALA. Years spent creating in South Africa shaped her visual practice and sparked a decade-long dialogue with the land and its people.

Each work captures the spirit and atmosphere of its setting, and extends into Spira’s limited-edition artist-label wine collaborations with leading South African producers.

Now on display at House of Sisters Grimm, this series celebrates a nation’s landscape, legacy, and creativity through one multidisciplinary lens.

Ella Spira is really successful at creating a mood in her paintings, capturing a latent feeling. Her palette is sober, her brush work is calm and considered. Her paintings evoke, more than depict.
